Fujifilm X100T: a short review

I'm spending some time in the country trying to reflect and getting to know myself a bit better. As I put aside all my cameras, this is the perfect excuse to convince my wife to let me use her Fujifilm X100T.

I've always loved this camera. It's already a bit old (it was released in 2014) but still working perfectly fine and creating stunning images.

These are some of my impressions:

  • It's so light and small. Even compared to my Sony cameras, the X100T is really compact. More impressive yet when you consider it's rocking a 23mm f/2 lens.
  • I love the 35mm field of view. Used to see everything at 24mm, this has been a nice and refreshing change. It's quite limiting in some situations but it opens up many other opportunities.
  • That lens, though! Fast aperture of f/2, small and able to produce incredible images. I love it.
  • 16MP. I'm not one who cares much about the megapixel count, but this is a bit short for cropping to square where I get an effective 10MP image. With my 24MP Sony and after cropping to square, I still have 16MP that I can crop even more if I need to.
  • It supports 1:1 aspect ratio! This is a game changer when it comes to compose in square, for obvious reasons.
  • My wife has the "tele adapter" which gives a field of view of around 50mm. I don't have it with me right now but I will be trying it out soon as well.
  • Battery life is as bad as it is in my Sony cameras.
  • The auto-focus is rather slow, but I couldn't care less about this.
  • It's a slow camera in general. Not a big deal, but I wish it was a bit faster to wake up.
  • No tilting screen. One of those things you don't appreciate enough until you don't have it.
  • Built-in ND filter. I believe it's a 3-stop ND filter, and I like it a lot. You can stop the lens down to "only" f/16 and the base ISO of this camera is 200, so it's necessary in really bright days to not overexpose your photographs. It can also be used to you shoot wide open in less bright situations.
  • Video is horrible. The worst. I don't even know why they bothered including video in this camera. It's there just in case you must record something, I guess.

Overall, I'm loving using it to take casual pictures on my walks through the woods and of everyday stuff in general.

I hope I can persuade my wife to let me have it for a bit longer and even work on a whole project using just this camera.

These are some sample images I've made with this camera.
