First photographer on Mars

March 30, 2020 in journal

I am fascinated by the photographs that the rovers have been sending from the red planet over the years. Mars is beautiful, and I would definitely have a lot of fun making some images there. Unfortunately, the odds of that happening are very low.

We will see plenty more photographs from Mars during our lifetime, I'm sure, but I look forward to seeing images taken by an artist. Not only from Mars, but also from the Moon - all those craters would make for amazing subjects!

Mars features mountains 2.5 times as tall as Mt Everest, 7-mile deep craters, blue sunrises and sunsets, among other things. There's even fog! There's no liquid water on the surface, but it does have clouds. And the best of all, gravity is less than half of Earth's, so you could carry more than twice the gear!

Since I won't be able to visit anytime soon -I mean, I can't even leave the house right now-, I did the next best thing: I spent some time this morning playing with some photographs taken by the rover Curiosity and tried to interpret them my way. Editing a sunset on Mars or the incredibly beautiful Bagnold Dunes was quite an experience.
