There's no better tool for photography than a healthy body and a sharp brain. It's not easy to keep them that way during these times, though, when billions of people are confined to their homes.
This is how I try to stay in shape, both physically and mentally, through this mandatory quarantine.
Body
I am very, very lucky. I'm staying at my parents' farm in the country, making this lockdown much easier than it would be if I were in an apartment.
I move as much as I can. I walk 5 miles and I run a 5k every day, for a total of 8 miles. That's a lot of laps around the house. A lot. It gets boring really quick and it's impossible to keep a pace, but it makes my heart work and I feel better afterwards.
Trapped in an apartment? Use the hallways, and if you are allowed to, the stairs. It's possible to get serious cardio in tiny spaces.
I also exercise inside the house. I like the workouts from the Adidas Training app because they don't require any equipment: squats, jumping jacks, sit ups, push ups, lunges, planks... I complete the whole thing with resistance bands.
And of course, I help my dad on farm tasks every once in a while...
Mind
I've been less successful when it comes to the mind, unfortunately: I find myself spending too much time on Twitter, and I check the news multiple times during the day.
Thankfully, I have photography to keep me sane: I've been photographing the storks that live in front of the farm, capturing the clear skies we've had lately, and experimenting with macro photography.
Making videos for my YouTube channel is another creative escape.
I'm also going through my collection of 10,000+ photographs from last year that need to be edited -or deleted. They bring back some good memories and remind me of a time when we were free.
Reading has helped me a lot, too. I have a long list of books I've been meaning to read and this is the perfect time to do so.
And finally, the dogs. They are calm and have no worries, living one day at a time. I could look at them playing for hours.
Stay sane
I hope you all are doing well and staying sane through these uncertain times. I just wanted to share some of the things I do everyday; small things, but they help me now that I am not able to do my job: to travel and make images.
