Madeira, and more specifically the forest of Fanal, was one of the best photography experiences I’ve ever had. A magical place with stunning trees.

Of course, this photograph I took of four sheep during an evening walk around town had to be part of this update. Sheep is still one of my favorite photos I've ever taken. You just never know when and where the next image will happen!

The Oregon Coast is absolutely stunning, no matter where you are. Heceta Head, where this image was made, is not an exception.

That morning, I was taking photos of the beautiful light against the rocks, when I saw a seagull flying by. I framed the photograph as fast as I could and clicked a few times. Luckily, one of them was perfect, with the seagull lit up by the light.

Image of the Month, December 2021: "The fence of winter"

The Great Lakes are one of my favorite places to photograph during the winter. The conditions can be extreme, but that's what makes them so special. I lost count of how many times I froze at the shore taking photographs. What I do remember, though, is the feeling of gratitude afterwards. It is a very humble experience, to battle the elements. To discover how fragile we are.

This fence is almost the perfect metaphor for this feeling: we can try to put up gates, but there's no stopping nature. And that's just such a beautiful feeling.

After spending a night up in Mt Hood, I was on my way down when I stumbled upon this beautiful view of the Newtown Creek and its canyon. The light was incredible, bathing an already stunning landscape with some magic.

A "last minute" image on a backpacking trip that almost didn't happen: sandwiched in between a windstorm and a snowstorm, the window for me to finally sleep next to the beautiful volcano was very, very narrow.

A long exposure in Lake McDonald, Montana. After days of photographing the majestic peaks in Glacier National Park, I ran across this serene scene on a very foggy morning. I immediately knew that was the image of the trip, so I set everything up and took a long exposure to make it even more peaceful. The result is Glacial Tree, the Image of the Month of August.

Beautiful Cannon Beach, a good example of what the Oregon Coast has to offer. Originally named, Cannon Beach is the Image of the Month of July.

As a not-so-fun fact, I dropped my litte RX100VII in the ocean while making this image - a rogue wave took it forever. Not a bad place to die, though.

I made this image just over a year go in Silver Falls State Park, near Salem, Oregon. I lived in Portland for quite a few years, but never made the trip to this beautiful spot with a camera in hand. Something I fixed last year.

This is my favorite image of that day, and I call it Silver Waterfall. It is also one of my newest additions to the Image of the Month collection.

Image of the Month, May 2021: "Mobius Arch"

Mobius Arch is the first image I add to the Image of the Month collection in a while. Actually, it is 1 of 8 new images to complete the collection for this year 2021.

I made this image on a cold morning at the Alabama Hills, a spot I had visited many times in the past. It is definitely one of the, if not the most beautiful single view I had seen in the US so far. Sunrises can be truly stunning there.

But this morning, there was no sunrise: the clouds obscured the view of the peaks of the Eastern Sierra. They also created a very nice atmosphere that I tried to capture here, using the Arch to frame some of the mountains in the background.

I knew this was going to be one of my favorite images from that place right away, and I believe now it is my best from there.

3 new "Image of the Month" prints

I've been pretty inconsistent updating the Image of the Month series. I finally had time to add 3 new images to the collection.

The first one is Giant, an image I made on a trip to beautiful Asturias in Northern Spain, just a couple of weeks before the pandemic hit. The Picos de Europa mountain range is one of my favorite places on Earth, and this image shows why.

Great Salt Reflections brings back some good memories from my most recent road trip across America. This was a beautiful and calm morning at the Great Salt Lake, in Utah. No one around, a lake as calm as a pool, nice weather, a beautiful sunrise, bisons and antelopes waking up around me... the only problem was the hundreds of hungry mosquitoes swarming me and every other living thing. Still a great moment I will always remember.

The last image is Alone, not far away from where I made Great Salt Reflections. The Antelope Island is a refuge for wildlife, including the bisons. These majestic animals roam these lands year-round, and when the water level is low enough to connect the island with mainland, they adventure further. That is what this one was doing, one step at a time.

Image of the Month is back: 3 new images!

I haven't released a new Image of the Month image in months, due to the coronavirus and the release of my book Becoming an American. So I decided to release 3 of them at the same time.

The first one is Moon, an image I made during the lockdown that kept us stuck at home for months. The sky became one of my favorite things to look at, especially the night sky. And there it was, of course, the Moon.

The Room is an image made back in 2019, during our first night in Chicago after a while in the countryside. It always shocks me how much light there is when the night comes. Even from our hotel room.

The last image is Couple. Made just before the pandemic hit, I had no idea I would spend the next few months observing these two storks who had settled in on top of a pole the previous summer. They are a young couple, and I witnessed their return from faraway lands to what they must call home, how hard they worked for weeks, and how they raised their first baby stork. I hope to see them again next year.

Image of the Month, March 2020: "Grand View"

Grand View is the new Image of the Month for the month of March.

The Grand Canyon took my breath away, but the same vastness that makes it so majestic, also makes it very hard to photograph. It was in the Desert View Watchtower where I found something that really caught my eye. The view from that window was stunning, so I framed the image on my Bronica. Just when I couldn't ask for more, a bird flew by. I had no idea if I'd captured it, and I didn't find out for a few more days. But there it was, on the negative. It was my favorite image from this special place.

Image of the Month, February 2020: "Golden Gate"

Golden Gate is the new Image of the Month for the month of February, 2020.

It was my birthday and we were getting ready to celebrate in this little bar in the Mission. I looked at the TV and saw some fog starting to roll in, and I soon realized that that evening was going to have the conditions I'd been chasing for so long on my previous trips to the Bay Area.

I only had my compact camera with me, and the battery was almost dead. Luckily, the bartender had a charger that I used to get some extra power. I grabbed the camera and ran to get a cab, as I cancelled all the birthday plans for that night.

It was freezing cold on that bridge, and traffic was loud, very loud. It was an evening I won't forget: the scene that unveiled when the lights were turned on in the dark mist was all I was hoping for.

Is printing your images still necessary?

I don’t remember who said it, or the exact quote, but it went something like this: an image isn’t an image until it becomes a print, or that the print is the final step for an image.

This used to be the case a few decades ago, when the only way to create and see an image was in the darkroom in the form of a print.

But is it still true today? With all the ways that today’s technology offers to share our art?

I don’t believe this is longer the case. I don’t think the print is the (only) final step of an image today.

Don’t get me wrong, printing your images is awesome and something that every photographer should do (I myself print some of them) -but we don’t have to print an image for it to be considered art.

Most of my images aren’t going to be printed, ever. They’ll live as digital art here on my website, on Instagram or on YouTube. I don’t think less of them: they are still my work, my art, and they fulfill their purpose as such.

I feel very lucky to live in this day and age when I can use film cameras from decades ago and print my images in the darkroom, and use a completely digital workflow from beginning to end.

Image of the Month, January 2020: "Cascade"

Cascade is the new Image of the Month for the month of January, 2020.

This is one of my earliest images -one of my favorites as well-, made in the beautiful North Cascades National Park on a very rainy and dark day. It was well after sunset when I saw this waterfall at full power. One of those moments when nature shows its power and you can't help it but to feel really small.

Image of the Month, December 2019: "White Badlands"

White Badlands is the new Image of the Month for the month of December.

I made this image in the remote Badlands National Park, South Dakota, in the middle of a blizzard that brought almost a foot of snow to the park and closed all the roads around. I was probably the only visitor that day, surely the only one in that white and empty campground.

I spent most of the time in the car, waiting for a chance to get out and make some images. Eventually, I was able to get out for just a few minutes, face the freezing temperatures and do some photography. It was so worth it.

Image of the Month, September 2019: "Saint John's"

Saint John's is the new Image of the Month for the month of September. If The Nest took a little bit of patience and waiting, this one was definitely one the hardest images I've ever made.

This is a 10-minute long exposure under pouring rain and next to hundreds of cars and trucks stuck in rush hour. The conditions were perfect, though, I had been waiting for a day like this for months. When I finally got the chance to create the image I had envisioned, I wasn't going to pass on it.

I'm glad I didn't. This is still one of my favorite images, the first print I've ever sold and now, part of the Image of the Month collection.
